ODW is working with CAIS to elevate safety in the global AI conversation
2022 — 2024
Branding, Website
The Center for AI Safety (CAIS) is a non-profit dedicated to reducing societal-scale risks from artificial intelligence.
In the summer of 2023 AI took the world's imagination by storm with wave after wave of public attention. We worked with CAIS leadership to develop the CAIS brand & web strategy with the goal of launching the new site while the AI narrative was still malleable.
We went live with the new website in April and one month later launched the infamous AI Safety letter.
In just 22 words it crystallized the stance of scientists and business leaders around the world. We developed a highly redundant method of capturing and authenticating signatories for the letter as well as a variety of tactics to collect thousands of signatures while still keeping the project embargoed until its release. In the end, the CAIS letter signatories includes: Sam Altman, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and over 1,000 scientists from DeepMind, Open AI, Meta, and more.
The CAIS AI Risk Letter played a significant role in increasing awareness among policymakers, researchers, and the public about the risks associated with artificial intelligence.
ODW also worked with CAIS to build a web-based edition of Dan Hendrycks' textbook: Introduction to AI Safety, Ethics, and Society
Our collaboration with the CAIS team was centered on transforming Dan Hendrycks' seminal textbook, "Introduction to AI Safety, Ethics, and Society," into an accessible, web-based format. This project was a unique fusion of academic rigor and cutting-edge web technologies, aimed at making this crucial material more accessible to a wider audience.
Challenges:
The primary challenge was to ensure that the complex and dynamic content of the textbook was accurately and effectively presented in a digital format. This involved addressing the intricate details of academic content, including formulas, diagrams, and version-controlled updates.
Solutions:
Version Control Systems for Textbook Content: Recognizing the need for efficient content management and regular updates, we utilized a split GitHub and Webflow CMS solution for managing textbook content and supporting data.
Latex Conversions: To preserve the academic integrity and formatting of the original textbook, we employed Latex conversions from print to web standards. This approach allowed us to maintain the precision of the original content, especially in the presentation of complex mathematical equations presented with MathJax.
Custom Content Management System (CMS): We developed a custom CMS tailored to the specific needs of serving textbook content, metadata, and future supporting content as needed for the in-person course.
Branding the AI Safety and Ethics textbook:
